Vintage BlackBerry Phones in 2026: A Collector's Guide for BlackBerry Enthusiasts

The Legacy of BlackBerry Lives On

For many Canadians, BlackBerry represents more than just a smartphone — it represents an era. The iconic physical keyboards, unmatched email experience, and professional design made BlackBerry one of the most respected mobile brands in history.

Today, devices such as the BlackBerry 9900, Classic, Q10, Z30, 9800 Torch, KEYone, KEY2, and Priv remain highly sought after by collectors, enthusiasts, and longtime BlackBerry fans.

However, it's important for buyers to understand that these devices are now considered end-of-life (EOL) products.

What Does End-of-Life Mean?

BlackBerry has discontinued support for its legacy operating systems and services. Most of these devices no longer receive security updates, software updates, BlackBerry infrastructure services, modern app support, banking app compatibility, or social media app support.

As a result, these phones should primarily be purchased for:

✔ Collection purposes
✔ BlackBerry enthusiasts
✔ Vintage technology collectors
✔ Backup calling and texting use (where network compatible)

Popular BlackBerry Models Loved by Collectors

BlackBerry Bold 9900

Released in 2011, the Bold 9900 is often regarded as one of the most beautiful BlackBerry devices ever made. Features: Physical QWERTY keyboard, touchscreen display, premium stainless-steel frame, BlackBerry OS 7. Today, it is primarily a collector's item.

BlackBerry Q10

The Q10 remains one of the most popular BlackBerry devices ever produced. Features: AMOLED display, physical keyboard, compact design, BlackBerry 10 OS. Many BlackBerry fans still use it for basic communication.

BlackBerry Z30

The Z30 was BlackBerry's largest flagship smartphone. Highlights: Large display, excellent battery life, premium construction, BB10 operating system.

BlackBerry Torch 9800

The Torch 9800 combined a touchscreen, slide-out keyboard, and BlackBerry OS. It remains one of the most unique BlackBerry devices ever produced.

BlackBerry KEYone

The KEYone was one of BlackBerry's Android-powered devices. Features: Android operating system, fingerprint sensor, physical keyboard, Google Play support (limited due to age). Although newer than BB10 devices, many modern apps no longer fully support older Android versions.

BlackBerry KEY2

The KEY2 is often considered the best BlackBerry ever made. Features: Premium keyboard, Android operating system, dual cameras, excellent build quality. Collectors and BlackBerry enthusiasts continue to seek out this model.

BlackBerry Priv

The Priv was BlackBerry's first Android smartphone featuring a slide-out keyboard, curved display, and Android operating system. It remains one of the most collectible Android-powered BlackBerry devices.

Can These BlackBerry Phones Still Make Calls and Send Texts?

The answer depends on the model and carrier.

3G Models

Older models such as the Bold 9900 and Torch 9800 may only work on networks that still support 3G service. Since many Canadian carriers have retired 3G networks, compatibility may be limited.

4G LTE Models

Some newer BlackBerry devices support LTE, including the BlackBerry Classic, Q10, Z30, KEYone, KEY2, and Priv. These devices may still support voice calls (carrier dependent), SMS text messaging, and basic LTE connectivity. However, functionality varies by carrier and location.

Will Apps Still Work?

For most buyers, the answer is No. Most modern apps are no longer supported on BlackBerry devices due to end-of-life operating systems, outdated Android versions, expired security support, and app developer discontinuation. Banking apps, most social media apps, modern streaming apps, and many Google services commonly no longer function. These phones should not be purchased with the expectation of using modern apps.

A Better Alternative for Everyday Use: Nokia 2720 V Flip

If you're looking for a reliable phone for daily communication, consider the Nokia 2720 V Flip. Benefits: unlocked for compatible carriers, 4G LTE connectivity, VoLTE support, long battery life, easy-to-use flip design, great for seniors and minimalists. Unlike many vintage BlackBerry devices, the Nokia 2720 was designed for modern LTE networks and remains a practical communication device.
